Maia Linda Karten

Maia Linda Karten is an NYC based photographer.
From a young age, the importance of the fleeting moment and documentation of life has held Maia Linda’s attention. Having grown up with older parents as well as a family history of Alzheimer's, the need to document it all and keep that knowledge close to be able to pass it on in the future was always at the forefront of her mind. It was through writing and photography that Maia Linda began her documentation of family and the little moments others may not notice. After high school, she attended Cornell University where she studied Fine Arts and fell in love with film development and the reward of the process. The tender care put into each shot taken and then the hours spent perfecting prints in the darkroom became her sanctuary, and with that her therapy through the losses of those around her.
Her practice today focuses on the observation of how people present themselves to the world in everyday life juxtaposed with the light of the person within. Utilizing emotions, light, multiple exposures and movement on film, she hopes to tell a story with her work, pushing the audience to feel and yet not be able to describe the feeling. The examination of this interaction between people and their environment paired with the care poured into each frame and print provides an introspective experience for both the artist and the viewer, offering up a window into the lost moments.
Maia Linda hopes to experience life as she sees it through her camera lens, and to pour that love back into the world.
